SCIENTIFIC PROCESS PART 2 – The Germ Theory

Robert F Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services, does not believe germs cause infectious disease.

He believes in an old idea called the Miasma Theory. Miasma means “bad air.” In medieval times people believed the odor rising off of dead and decomposing things would bring illness. People believed that disease appeared on its own. Those who believed in miasma worked to improve sanitation in the cities. Because this lowered the amount of disease, they thought the theory was correct.

In the 1680s, a cloth seller and amateur scientist, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, saw tiny living things in his microscope. He called them “animalcules,” His discovery led to more studies of these organisms. In 1668 Francesco Redi proved that maggots did not appear on meat by themselves. Life did not just appear out of nowhere. Then in the 1850s, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch created the germ theory of disease.

Pasteur proved that liquid broth did not spoil when it was sterilized but spoiled when it was exposed to outside air. Spoiling was due to bacteria from the air. Pasteur also created a way to remove bacteria from milk. The process is called Pasteurization, and is still used today. Koch showed that specific germs caused specific diseases. He proved how germs were spread from person to person or from dirty objects. Once in the body, germs multiplied and caused illness.

In that age of discovery, thousands of scientists, trained and amateur, studied life. They shared new ideas and discoveries. Some studied illness in animals like silk worms or sheep. Others studied people. They came up with new theories and tests to prove them. As scientists learned more about biology, germ theory became the best explanation for infectious disease.

Kennedy also uses “Miasma Theory” to mean strengthening the immune system. He believes diseases can be controlled with cleanliness, vitamins and good nutrition alone. He wrote that people should take full control of their health and that germs are only dangerous to people who have poor nutrition, poor health and stress. Good health does help prevent disease, and helps people recover. But not all illness is just a person’s own fault. Many healthy people became very sick or died from COVID and now Measles and other infections.

His beliefs are the basis of the Make America Healthy Again plan.

Because he is so sure he is right, he as cut billions of dollars from medical research.

He has ordered CDC staff not to test for bird flu and not to speak to anyone about it.
